About

Anthony and Lisa Galpin own and operate Galpin Family Farms with their kids, and cultivate 25 acres across Owari Satsuma's, Daisy SL, Tango, Gold Nugget, and Finger Limes. 4 acres are dedicated to Owari production, and their trees are now 50 years old. Typically Japan won't certify a Satsuma tree as premium until it's over 20 years old - while most commercial operations churn and burn new varieties every 10 years. The Galpin's stand behind their product, and have the experience across 20 years to properly manage a special, mature orchard in the valley.  While GFF has not pursued organic certification, they have instead focused on best practices for quality and natural growth - using mostly organic practices. Trees are never sprayed, instead pheromones are used to disrupt pests like peach twig bore or the oriental fruit moth. They avoid synthetic fertilizers, and focus on compost and compost teas to maintain soil health. No large equipment is used for weeding or harvesting. Unique to their operation and similar to table grapes, they cover half of the orchard with plastic to protect the fruit against cold rain and foggy conditions to extend the season. Most importantly, all harvest and selection is by hand. They'll comb one tree 15x throughout a growing season and only harvest peak quality and ripeness. GFF will harvest and field pack within 24 hours of delivery. BRIX testing is available and sweetness on mandarins tend to peak around February.
